    What the law actually says, and what it means for you.

    This is one of the most common questions I get, and the good news is that for almost every bike we sell, the answer is simple. The exception is the speed-pedelec (HS) versions, which are covered below.

    If your e-bike meets the UK definition of an electrically assisted pedal cycle, it is treated exactly like a normal bicycle. No licence. No registration. No insurance requirement. No special helmet.

    The rules only get complicated when a bike falls outside those limits. That is where the confusion starts, because there are a lot of bikes on the market that look like e-bikes but are not legal to ride as one.

    I would rather you understood this clearly before you buy, not after.

    In the UK, the legal term is EAPC: electrically assisted pedal cycle. To qualify, the bike must have functional pedals that propel it, a motor rated at no more than 250W continuous power, and the motor must stop assisting at 15.5mph (25km/h). There can be no full-speed throttle. A walk-assist mode up to 3.7mph is allowed, which is useful for pushing a heavy cargo bike up a ramp, but that is it.

    The bike must also display certain markings: the manufacturer's name, the motor's power output, and either the battery voltage or maximum assisted speed. Reputable manufacturers like Riese & Müller and Moustache handle all of this at the factory. You will never need to worry about compliance when buying from us.

    If a bike meets these criteria, it is legally a bicycle. Full stop.

    Every standard (non-HS) bike we sell is a UK-legal e-bike: a 250W motor with assistance up to 15.5mph. HS speed pedelecs are legal too, but as mopeds, with registration, insurance and a licence.
